Traveling with Denoxa Adventures
Denoxa Adventures runs group bus tours, in-destination events, and interest-based travel experiences — like this plain air painting retreat through Germany, Austria, and the Dolomites, where eighteen women from four continents became fast friends over shared easels.

What is Denoxa Adventures?
Denoxa Adventures is a travel company built around a simple idea: that some of the best journeys happen in the company of strangers who quickly become friends. They organize group bus tours, in-destination events, and interest-based travel experiences — trips designed not around ticking off landmarks, but around a shared passion. Photography, walking, cooking, and in my case, painting.
I have traveled plenty on my own, but there is a particular kind of magic in joining a trip where everyone has come for the same reason. You arrive a stranger and leave with a contact list that spans four continents.
A plain air painting trip in the Dolomites
The trip I joined was a plain air painting retreat in the Dolomites. For the uninitiated, plain air simply means painting outdoors, on the spot, whatever the light and weather are doing. It is the slowest, most absorbing way I know to see a landscape — because you are not passing through it, you are sitting in it for hours, noticing how the shadows move.
The Dolomites are a painter's dream. Towering pale peaks that turn rose-gold at sunset, green valleys stitched with church spires, and mountain huts where a coffee costs less than a smile. Each morning our small group would set up easels in a new spot — a meadow, a lakeshore, a village square — and our instructor would guide us through capturing what we saw. Some of us were experienced, many were not. It did not matter. Everyone produced something worth keeping.
Through Germany and Austria
We did not stay in one place. The trip wound through Germany and Austria before landing us in the Italian Dolomites, and the bus journeys between painting stops were part of the joy. There were castles on hillsides, lakes that looked painted already, and whole afternoons of watching the Alps rearrange themselves outside the window.
The in-destination events Denoxa arranged along the way were a surprise I had not expected — a wine tasting in a centuries-old cellar, a traditional music evening in a Tyrolean village, a morning market visit where we sketched the stalls. These were not generic tourist add-ons; they were chosen to deepen our sense of the places, and they gave the trip a rhythm beyond the easel.
A group of eighteen women
Here is the part I will remember longest. Our group was eighteen women, and we came from everywhere. Most were from the United States, Australia, and Canada — and then there was one woman who had traveled all the way from Singapore to paint mountains she had only ever seen in photographs.
Eighteen women, eighteen lives, eighteen reasons for being there. Some were recently retired, some were between chapters, one was marking a milestone birthday, another was recovering from a difficult year. Over shared meals and side-by-side easels, the differences dissolved. We traded tips on paintbrushes and on life. By the second evening we were laughing like old friends; by the final night, when we laid our paintings out together to see the week's work, there was hardly a dry eye in the room.
Why interest-based travel changes everything
What Denoxa Adventures understands is that interest-based travel does something ordinary tourism cannot. It gives strangers a shared task, and that task becomes the bridge. You are not making small talk over a buffet — you are helping each other mix the right green for an alpine meadow, or laughing over a painting that went terribly wrong, or walking together to find the perfect spot as the light fades.
By the end, the painting mattered less than the people. I came home with a folder of watercolors I am honestly proud of, and a notebook full of names, emails, and promises to meet again. The woman from Singapore and I still message each other most weeks.
Would I go again?
In a heartbeat. If you have ever wondered whether a group trip is for you — whether you are "the group type" — I would say this: the right group, organized around the right interest, is one of the most enriching ways to travel that exists. You bring your curiosity, and Denoxa brings the rest: the route, the events, the easels, and eighteen strangers who are about to become your friends.
